Fairness can be explained in many different terms. Some people’s definition would be simply doing the right thing, on the other hand others would say it’s following the rules and standards. For me it’s both but much more. When it comes to fairness, the first things I think of it how I would feel in someone else’s shoes. I think of how I would feel if the same thing happened to me and how I would want to be treated. If I feel as though their situation isn’t being handled correctly, or is under the wrong circumstances, then I change my attitude and fix it.
For example, take group projects. Say there are four students who form a group because the wanted to be with their friends, but only one of them end up getting all the work done while the rest slack off. Would you consider that fair? No, of course not, so if it were me in the group I would address the situation, and politely ask for the others to have evenly distributed part of the work that needs to be done. If they refuse, then I would simply join a different group that would have fairer conditions.
Being fair doesn’t just apply to others, it also your job to be fair to other people and even yourself. Just remember that there are countless opportunities in life to be fair, but the whether you are or not is up to you. Just try to make the best decision, and who knows you might get some good karma for it.
